New Delhi – Even though the monsoon has officially withdrawn, several Indian states are experiencing unexpected shifts in weather. On 6 October, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued yellow alerts for Delhi‑NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, warning of heavy rain, strong winds, thunderstorms, and possible hail.
According to the IMD, a deep low-pressure system over Odisha and Chhattisgarh is causing these irregular weather patterns in northern India.
In and around Delhi, thunderstorms and heavy showers are likely today. With the yellow alert in place, authorities have advised residents to stay cautious and avoid nonessential outings. Strong winds, thunder, and hail could disrupt daily life.
In Uttar Pradesh, relief from recent muggy heat is expected to be short-lived. The IMD predicts intense rain and hail on 6 and 7 October, especially in western districts. Areas such as Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, Moradabad, Rampur, Sambhal, Ghaziabad, NOIDA, Agra, Firozabad, and Etawah may see heavy rainfall and lightning.
In Bihar, the districts of Supaul, Araria, and Madhubani are under red alert, while several neighboring districts also face the likelihood of rain and storms. Overcast skies and heavy downpours are expected in spots across the state.
Rajasthan too is bracing for stormy weather. Multiple districts have been alerted to heavy rain and gusty winds, and forecasts suggest this unsettled condition may persist for 3 to 4 days.
Up north, Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude regions received the season’s first snowfall recently. The IMD has issued orange alerts for Chamba, Kullu, Mandi, Lahaul-Spiti, and Kangra, warning of heavy rain and possible hailstorms.
The weather agency expects the intensity to ease from 7 October onward. Rainfall should begin tapering off in western UP by 8 October and in eastern UP by 9 October.
Given the potential disruption to daily life, the IMD has urged people to remain vigilant, stay indoors where possible, and adhere to instructions from local authorities.
