Mumbai is all set to welcome its second international airport as the much-anticipated Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) prepares for its grand inauguration. According to CIDCO Vice Chairman and Managing Director Vijay Singhal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate the airport on October 8, 2025, at 2:40 PM.
This modern aviation hub recently cleared a critical milestone on September 30, when it received operational clearance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Commercial flight services from NMIA are expected to begin by December 2025, bringing significant relief to the overburdened Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
Key Highlights of NMIA
IATA Code: NMI
Annual Passenger Capacity: Up to 90 million once fully operational
Cargo Handling Capacity: 3.2 million metric tonnes annually
Location: Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR)
Phase-wise Development: The airport is being constructed in multiple phases to meet rising air travel demand
Strategic Goal: Designed to reduce congestion at Mumbai’s existing international airport and enhance regional connectivity
With these capabilities, Navi Mumbai International Airport is poised to become one of Asia’s most advanced aviation hubs, setting a new benchmark for air travel infrastructure in India.
Public-Private Partnership at the Core
The NMIA project is a significant example of collaboration between the public and private sectors. The Adani Group holds a 74% stake in the project, while the remaining 26% is owned by CIDCO, a Maharashtra government agency responsible for urban development in Navi Mumbai.
The airport’s development aligns with India’s broader goal of upgrading aviation infrastructure and meeting the increasing demand for both passenger and cargo air transport.
