The Bar Council of India had earlier suspended lawyer Rakesh Kishore from practicing law, and now the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has also canceled his membership. This decision follows Kishore’s shocking act on October 6, when he attempted to throw a shoe at the bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai inside the Supreme Court.
Security personnel quickly intervened and stopped Kishore during the incident. While being escorted out, he shouted slogans declaring, "India will not tolerate the insult to Sanatan Dharma." Kishore was briefly held in custody, but CJI Gavai remained calm throughout the episode and did not respond publicly.
Kishore had been a provisional member of the SCBA since 2011, but his membership was revoked due to this unacceptable behavior. Earlier, the Bar Council had also suspended him from practicing law.
Kishore explained that his protest was sparked by a comment from CJI Gavai during a hearing on restoring a 7-foot broken idol of Lord Vishnu from Khajuraho. The Chief Justice had remarked that if the petitioner was a true devotee, they should approach the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which holds jurisdiction over the matter, rather than the court.
This incident has sparked discussions around religious sensitivity and maintaining the decorum and respect of the Supreme Court.
