A fresh political storm has erupted in Maharashtra after Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) leader Aditya Thackeray accused the State Election Commission of large-scale voter list manipulation. Thackeray claimed that over 38 registered voters share the same room address in Mumbai’s Worli constituency—a shocking revelation that has triggered a major inquiry.
Drawing parallels with Rahul Gandhi’s recent press conference, Thackeray alleged that the voter lists contain fake and duplicate entries, with several names belonging to individuals who no longer reside at the registered addresses. Presenting a detailed report, he argued that such irregularities strike at the very foundation of democracy.
“If 38 people are shown living in a single room, where is the honesty in our elections?” Thackeray asked, adding that if this can happen in Mumbai, one can only imagine what’s occurring in rural areas. While he refrained from naming any specific party, his remarks clearly hinted at the BJP and the Election Commission.
Following his allegations, the State Election Commission swiftly issued directives to district collectors, municipal bodies, and panchayat offices to review voter lists and identify potential duplicate entries. Officials have been ordered to mark suspicious names with a special symbol and verify them locally.
Those found with duplicate registrations will receive notices and must prove their eligibility to vote in that area. If unable to do so, their names will be deleted. On election day, any such voter must sign an undertaking affirming that they haven’t voted elsewhere before being allowed to cast their ballot.
The Election Commission has assured that the verification process will be strict yet fair, ensuring no legitimate voter is unjustly removed.
Aditya Thackeray, however, insists this is not a mere clerical error but a systematic manipulation of democracy. “Every fake vote kills democracy,” he said, urging the Election Commission to conduct a transparent investigation and release a public report to restore voter confidence.
