A tragic incident in Chhindwara district’s Parasia region has shaken the community after 10 children died due to consumption of a poisonous cough syrup. Following the serious case, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav swiftly suspended the pediatrician involved, Dr. Praveen Soni.
According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s office, Dr. Soni has been removed from his post and transferred to the regional health service office. He is accused of negligence, having used a toxic cough syrup named Coldrif on children, both in a government hospital and his private clinic.
Laboratory investigations revealed that Coldrif contained an alarmingly high concentration of diethylene glycol—48%, nearly 480 times above the permissible limit. This toxic chemical is known to severely damage kidneys and is believed to be the primary cause of the children’s deaths.
The police arrested Dr. Praveen Soni from Rajpal Chowk in Chhindwara and registered a case against him and the syrup’s manufacturer, Sresan Pharmaceuticals, based in Tamil Nadu. As per Superintendent of Police Ajay Pandey, most affected children had been treated by Dr. Soni with Coldrif, making him the key accused in the case.
Reacting strongly, the Madhya Pradesh government immediately banned the sale of Coldrif cough syrup and ordered strict actions and thorough investigations against all responsible parties.
This tragic case highlights the grave risks posed by adulterated medicines and lax oversight. It calls for more effective regulatory enforcement and swift investigative measures by the health authorities to prevent such disasters in the future.
