Patna | NewsOrbital Desk:
As Bihar gears up for its 2025 Assembly Elections, the political landscape is witnessing an unexpected buzz — this time centered around acclaimed folk singer Maithili Thakur. Her recent meeting with senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders has triggered discussions about a potential entry into politics.
On October 5, BJP National General Secretary Vinod Tawde shared a few photos on social media featuring Maithili Thakur alongside Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai. In his post, Tawde wrote,
"During the Lalu regime in 1995, many families left Bihar. Now, one of those daughters — Maithili Thakur — is considering returning, inspired by the pace of progress in the new Bihar."
He also encouraged her to contribute to the state’s development.
Maithili acknowledged the meeting in a post of her own, saying,
"Conversations with those who dream big for Bihar always remind me of the power of service and vision. I’m thankful to Nityanand Rai ji and Vinod Tawde ji for this inspiring interaction."
This interaction has stirred widespread speculation: Will Maithili Thakur contest the 2025 Bihar Assembly Elections? While no official statement has been made, the possibility is now openly discussed in political circles.
Maithili Thakur hails from the Benipatti area in Madhubani district of Bihar. A well-known figure in the Indian folk music scene, she has garnered a massive following through social media platforms and her widely viewed YouTube channel. In July 2025, she turned 25 and was also recently named Bihar’s State Icon by the Election Commission.
Coming from a musically rich family, Maithili received classical training in Hindustani music, harmonium, and tabla from her grandfather and father — both music educators. Alongside her brothers, she has revived and popularized traditional folk songs in Maithili, Bhojpuri, and Hindi. She has also been a finalist on national music reality shows like Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.
Though it remains unclear whether her meeting with BJP leaders was political or cultural in nature, it has undeniably fueled speculation. With her popularity among the youth and deep rural connect, many see her as a potentially influential political figure in the making.
For now, all eyes are on what Maithili Thakur’s next move will be — a formal political debut, or just a momentary interaction rooted in cultural appreciation?
