New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India has dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged vote fraud during the Karnataka Assembly elections. The plea came in the wake of accusations made by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who had claimed that votes were stolen in several constituencies, including Bengaluru Central.

The petition, filed by Advocate Rohit Pandey, requested the formation of an SIT headed by a retired judge to investigate these claims. However, the bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Jomol Bagchi refused to entertain the petition, stating that the matter is within the purview of the Election Commission.

The court remarked, "This is not for us to decide. The appropriate forum is the Election Commission. If the petitioner has concerns, they should be addressed there."

The petitioner’s counsel argued that the Election Commission had already been approached but had not taken any substantial action. Despite this, the apex court maintained its stance and declined to intervene.

Notably, on August 7, Rahul Gandhi held a press conference accusing the BJP of orchestrating large-scale "vote theft." In response, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar directed Gandhi to submit an affidavit within seven days or withdraw the allegations officially.
