This year’s Durga Puja celebrations in Bangladesh were marked by an unexpected controversy, as multiple temple mandaps reported beards being placed on the faces of Asur (demon) idols. According to Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Advisor, approximately 793 mandaps experienced such incidents. Authorities suspect the involvement of extremist intellectual groups aiming to foment communal unrest.
Following these developments, Dhaka Police’s core committee convened to address the issue. The Home Advisor highlighted that this act was a deliberate attempt to incite religious and communal tension, potentially leading to violence. Thanks to swift administrative action and cooperation from the public, these attempts were successfully thwarted, allowing the Durga Puja festivities to conclude peacefully.
Police have registered general diaries (GD) concerning the incidents and launched thorough investigations. Heightened vigilance from intelligence units and law enforcement agencies ensured no major disturbances occurred.
The Home Affairs Advisor also addressed a separate case from Khagrachhari involving allegations of sexual assault. Medical reports revealed no concrete evidence, and with military and police support alongside local cooperation, the situation remains under control. Section 144, previously imposed in the region, has been lifted, and the area is stable.
The core committee also discussed other key issues, including the upcoming national elections, student union polls, the Rohingya crisis, weapons seizures, anti-drug campaigns, and crime control efforts related to theft, extortion, and robbery. The administration reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strict oversight over these matters.
In closing, the government emphasized the paramount importance of religious and communal harmony. Authorities urge citizens to celebrate festivals with peace and mutual respect, rejecting any acts that may incite hatred or division.
