FBI Director Kash Patel is under intense scrutiny following allegations that he used federal agents and resources to provide personal security for his girlfriend, country singer Alexis Wilkins. The controversy emerged after a New York Times report, prompting concern within U.S. intelligence circles and criticism from former agency officials regarding potential violations of FBI protocol.
The Alleged Misuse of SWAT Teams
The reports trace the issue back to an NRA event in Atlanta, where Wilkins was performing. According to the NYT, she was accompanied by two FBI SWAT agents reportedly assigned at Patel’s direction. These agents checked the venue for potential threats and returned after finding none. Patel allegedly reprimanded the team commander for leaving without providing “necessary protection” for Wilkins.
Former officials noted that deploying SWAT personnel for such events—without an immediate high-risk threat—is highly unusual, suggesting an unprecedented use of agency resources.
Extended Security Measures
The controversy extends beyond Atlanta. Reports claim that FBI agents were also assigned to Wilkins for other U.S. performances in Nashville and other cities. Additionally, in May, Wilkins reportedly attended a closed-door security conference in London with Patel, accompanied by FBI personnel from the U.S. Embassy for transportation and protection.
Private Jet Usage Controversy
The most discussed aspect involves Patel’s alleged use of FBI aircraft. While agency rules permit the FBI Director to use government aircraft for security purposes, private use requires reimbursement at commercial rates. Critics allege Patel frequently used small FBI jets—and once a Boeing 757—for personal travel, including trips to Nevada and Tennessee to meet Wilkins.
Defense and Criticism
Patel’s spokesperson, Ben Williamson, defended these measures, stating that Wilkins had received “hundreds of credible death threats,” making security a legitimate concern. He also claimed that Patel’s usage of agency resources was consistent with previous directors and that “misguided criticism will not impede the FBI’s mission.”
However, former agents argue that such decisions distort the agency’s priorities, particularly since Patel has publicly supported substantial FBI budget cuts, highlighting the contrast between agency funding and personal use of resources.
