In a major step toward modernizing India’s rail infrastructure, the North Central Railway’s Jhansi Division has undertaken a significant upgrade for the first time in four decades. The division is replacing 40-year-old Overhead Equipment (OHE) wires with new jointless contact wires, a move expected to dramatically enhance train punctuality and operational reliability.

First Upgrade in 40 Years

This is the first such replacement since the railway’s electrification began in 1985–86, when older technology required OHE wires of around 1,500 meters per drum with multiple brazing joints. These joints often led to wire breakages and power disruptions, causing delays and stoppages during train operations.

Now, by installing jointless contact wires, trains will experience fewer interruptions, reducing the chances of halts between stations and improving punctuality across the division.

Modernization Efforts Underway

As part of its ongoing modernization drive, the Jhansi Division’s Electrical Department has installed jointless contact wires on 33 kilometers of track during October alone. So far in the current financial year, 94.2 kilometers of track have been upgraded with these new wires.

The new technology replaces the NICCO-made joint contact wires, which had served since the original electrification era. The jointless design ensures better current flow, minimizes maintenance needs, and increases wire longevity.

Benefits for Passengers and Operations

With this technological shift, passengers can expect fewer delays, smoother journeys, and improved safety standards. The new OHE system will reduce the risk of electrical faults, helping trains maintain consistent schedules and minimizing disruptions during peak hours.

Commitment to Infrastructure Improvement

The Jhansi Division has reaffirmed its commitment to continuously improving rail infrastructure. Efforts are underway to replace outdated systems and introduce modern, efficient technology across the network. This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader mission to enhance operational efficiency, passenger comfort, and service reliability.

The success of this project is expected to set a new standard for railway maintenance and punctuality improvements across other divisions under the North Central Railway zone.
