Belgium’s Antwerp court has approved the extradition of Mehul Choksi, one of India’s most high-profile economic fugitives, back to India. The court confirmed that the request made by Indian authorities is legitimate and ruled that Choksi’s arrest by Belgian police was fully lawful. This decision marks a significant legal victory for India’s investigative agencies, the CBI and ED.
However, Choksi’s legal team has announced plans to appeal the verdict in a higher court, meaning he will not be immediately sent to India. Despite this, the ruling is seen as a crucial milestone in the extradition process and a positive step forward for Indian law enforcement.
Mehul Choksi was arrested by Antwerp police on April 11, 2025. He has been in custody for over four months, with all bail applications rejected by Belgian courts. The court also noted that there is a genuine risk of Choksi fleeing, which justified his continued detention.
This ruling underlines Belgium’s cooperation with India in tackling economic crimes and sets a precedent for handling similar cases in the future.
