In a key move to boost India’s railway infrastructure, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved four multi-tracking railway projects worth ₹24,634 crore during its meeting on Tuesday in Delhi.
These strategic projects aim to decongest busy rail corridors, improve connectivity across several states, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. Two major projects will benefit Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat directly.
The first project, the third and fourth rail lines between Vadodara and Ratlam, spans 259 km and will cost approximately ₹8,885 crore. It will pass through Vadodara, Panchmahal, and Dahod districts in Gujarat, and Jhabua and Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. The plan includes 95 road under/over bridges, 2 rail overbridges, and 4 tunnels.
The second major development involves the construction of the fourth line between Itarsi–Bhopal–Bina, covering 237 km with an estimated cost of ₹4,329 crore. This section will include 82 bridges and 9 tunnels, directly benefiting Bhopal, Vidisha, Raisen, Sehore, Sagar, and Narmadapuram districts.
Importantly, these projects are expected to cut down 320 million kg of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to planting over 13 million trees. Additionally, they will enhance connectivity to major cities like Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, while also improving access to heritage sites such as Sanchi and Bhimbetka.
These projects reflect the government's commitment to green infrastructure and modern, efficient transport.
