Patna’s long-awaited dream of metro rail service finally came true on October 6, when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar officially inaugurated the Patna Metro. As Bihar’s first metro project, it is set to transform urban transport, making travel smoother and more comfortable for daily commuters.

In the initial phase, the metro’s Red Line will run from New Patliputra Bus Terminal to Bhootnath Road station, covering approximately 6.1 kilometers. Alongside this, CM Nitish Kumar laid the foundation for Corridor One, which includes a 9.35-kilometer underground tunnel from Patna Junction to Rukanpura, featuring six underground stations.

Patna Metro offers affordable fares, starting at ₹15 and going up to ₹30. Services will operate daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, with trains running every 20 minutes, totaling about 40 to 42 trips per day, promising significant relief from traffic congestion.

The metro coaches are designed to reflect Bihar’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing artwork inspired by Golghar, Mahavir Temple, and Madhubani paintings. Special seating is reserved for women and differently-abled passengers. Safety features include panic buttons, CCTV cameras, emergency alarms, and digital displays providing real-time station updates.

The entire Patna Metro project costs approximately ₹13,925 crore, funded through a partnership between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the central government, and Bihar state government. The Red Line will extend to 16.86 kilometers, while the Blue Line will cover 14.56 kilometers, with a total of 24 stations planned. The project is expected to be fully completed by 2027.

Beyond easing daily commutes, the Patna Metro is poised to reduce pollution and contribute significantly to the city’s sustainable development, offering a modern and eco-friendly transport solution for Bihar’s capital.
