Sharif’s Nobel Nomination Rocks Gaza Summit; Meloni Reacts Visibly
During a high-stakes Gaza peace summit in Egypt, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif caught attention by announcing he would nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Sharif claimed Trump played a pivotal role in defusing tensions between India and Pakistan and securing a ceasefire.
“Pakistan has nominated President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary contributions to prevent war between India and Pakistan and ensure a ceasefire,” Sharif said.
That statement triggered a visible reaction from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who instinctively covered her mouth. Her expression, captured on camera, drew widespread attention as attendees looked on in surprise.
The summit was well attended — leaders including Trump, Meloni, and UK PM Keir Starmer were present. Under the co-chairmanship of Trump and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi, participants signed a ceasefire agreement and laid out plans for Gaza’s postwar reconstruction.
As part of the deal, Hamas released all living Israeli hostages, while Israel freed about 2,000 Palestinian prisoners as a gesture of goodwill.
Though India had earlier dismissed Trump’s claims of mediating peace between India and Pakistan, Sharif’s bold move has revived debates around his role and influence in regional diplomacy.
Meloni, known for her expressive reactions at international forums, has previously made headlines — whether by rolling her eyes at delayed leaders or giving tense glances during high-level retreats.
