New Delhi — In a major development, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued a record 189 Interpol Red and Blue Notices between January and September 2025 — the highest in its history. CBI Director Praveen Sood shared this update at a conference on “Extraditing Fugitives: Challenges and Strategies” held on Thursday.
Sood noted that the time taken to process requests for Red Notices has drastically reduced — from an average of 14 months to just three months — enabling faster international action against fugitives.
By September 2025, 35 fugitives had been successfully brought back to India, marking a significant improvement compared to previous years — with 30 repatriations in 2024 and 29 in 2023.
As of now, 338 extradition requests are still pending with foreign governments. However, only eight proposals for Interpol notices are currently awaiting action, the oldest being just a month old — indicating improved efficiency.
CBI is also working to convert Blue Corner Notices into Red Corner Notices, aiming to strengthen international cooperation and ensure quicker identification and arrest of wanted individuals.
This approach is part of India’s broader strategy to enhance its global law enforcement presence and bring back those involved in economic offenses and serious crimes. With streamlined coordination and faster response times, India is setting a new benchmark in transnational criminal justice.
