Karur, Tamil Nadu - The Supreme Court of India has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the tragic stampede during actor-turned-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur, which resulted in the deaths of 41 people.
The incident took place on October 27, during a political gathering organized by Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). The large crowd and alleged lack of planning led to a deadly stampede, sparking outrage across the state.
A bench led by Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice N.V. Anjaria expressed serious concerns regarding the event’s approval process. The court questioned why the Tamil Nadu government had earlier denied AIADMK permission to hold a rally at the same venue on October 10 due to “space constraints,” yet approved TVK’s rally just 17 days later.
The Supreme Court also criticized the Madras High Court for intervening in the case, even though it was already under consideration by the Madurai Bench. The apex court emphasized the need for judicial consistency and expressed concern over procedural irregularities.
With the investigation now handed over to the CBI, focus will shift to determining if negligence or preferential treatment played a role in the approval of the rally, and whether the tragedy could have been prevented.
