In a welcome move ahead of Diwali, the Supreme Court has granted permission for the sale and use of green crackers in Delhi-NCR from October 18 to October 21. This decision strikes a balance between preserving cultural traditions and addressing rising air pollution concerns.
The bench, headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice KV Chandran, considered suggestions from legal advisors and the concerns of industries involved in firecracker manufacturing. The court noted that smuggling of traditional firecrackers causes greater environmental harm and called for a practical solution to manage celebrations responsibly.
To ensure compliance, patrolling teams will be deployed across Delhi-NCR, including 14 districts of Haryana that fall within the region. Firecracker manufacturers will be required to upload QR codes for their green products on a dedicated platform, promoting transparency and traceability.
This ruling brings festive cheer to residents, who can now celebrate Diwali with green crackers without legal uncertainty. However, the court emphasized that all guidelines must be strictly followed to prevent misuse and protect public health.
The Supreme Court’s decision is seen as a thoughtful step toward sustainable celebrations—respecting tradition while promoting eco-conscious practices. It also sends a clear message that environmental safety and cultural expression can coexist when approached with responsibility.
As the festive season nears, Delhi-NCR now looks forward to a safer, greener Diwali.
